On 4 September, at noon, POCO launched the X8 Power in India. The phone has a 10,000mAh battery — about three and a half days of use, per the company — a faux-leather back, and, printed across its marketing in capitals, one word of positioning:

Power MAXXING.

Not a caption. Not a journalist’s shorthand. POCO’s own teaser told people to come see what power maxxing looks like. This is the tagline. It went on the launch materials, into the paid posts, and onto the box art.

The last rung was always going to be a budget

We’ve spent a year logging this suffix climbing. Individuals used it, then institutions borrowed it, then newsrooms started generating stories out of it, then a governor put it in a statehouse account.

Every one of those was free. Somebody typed the word because it was the handiest word.

This is different, and it’s the milestone that actually costs something. A Xiaomi sub-brand ran the tagline past whatever internal process approves taglines, attached a launch to it, and then spent money — agency time, influencer contracts, the paid-partnership posts carrying that little grey label. A brand does not put a slang term on a product it intends to sell to tens of millions of people unless it is very confident the term reads as aspirational rather than terminally online.

India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market. The word cleared that bar.

And it’s the correct usage, which is the part we enjoy

Note what POCO is actually doing with it. They are not using -maxxing to mean trendy. They’re using it to mean one stat pushed past where anyone else pushed it — 10,000mAh in a phone, when the category argues about 5,000.

That’s the construction used exactly as designed. The X8 Power is not a balanced handset. It is a deliberate, embarrassing, magnificent over-commitment to a single number, sold to people who have decided that battery is the stat that matters and everything else is negotiable. It is, in the most literal sense available, a maxxed build.

Which means the first mass-market advertising campaign in this vocabulary is also one of the most accurate uses of it anyone has managed. The forums spent ten years arguing that you should pick the stat that actually matters to you and drive it into the ground while everyone else optimises for balance.

A phone company just did that, put 10,000mAh in the chassis, and wrote the word on the box.
