Modafinil enhances cognition and focus

Works · Evidence supports it. Most users get the claimed result.

Real cognitive enhancement in well-rested AND sleep-deprived users — particularly working memory, attention, executive function. Rx-only. Tolerance and sleep disruption are the catches.

What the evidence says

The studies, decoded

Battleday & Brem 2015 meta-review (24 studies) concluded modafinil produces consistent, measurable improvements in 'higher-order' cognition — attention, executive function, learning. Effects are larger in sleep-deprived users but documented in rested users too. Side effects: insomnia, headache, anxiety in 5-10%. Skin reactions and Stevens-Johnson syndrome are rare but serious.

How it actually works

Mechanism

Promotes wakefulness via dopamine reuptake inhibition (weaker than amphetamines), histamine, orexin, and norepinephrine modulation. Less dependence/abuse potential than amphetamine-class stimulants, but not zero.

What to actually expect

Realistic outcome

100-200mg once in the morning, occasional use (not daily). Plan for poor sleep that night. Rx-only in most jurisdictions — gray-market sourcing is common but illegal in many places. Stack with hydration + actual sleep on off-days.

If this is overhyped — what is not

Better alternatives

Caffeine + L-theanine (100/200mg) gets you most of the focus benefit without Rx. Sleep dominates anything pharmacological. Adderall is stronger but with worse tolerability and abuse profile.
